Botox Q & A
What is BOTOX?
BOTOX is an injectable derived from natural, purified protein of the Botulinum toxin. It is most often used in a cosmetic nature to treat lines and wrinkles in the face. The injections are placed into the muscle just under the skin with an ultrafine needle. The BOTOX treatment works by relaxing the facial muscles by blocking nerve impulses and reducing the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines between the brows and elsewhere on the face to form over time. Once the muscles are at rest, the skin becomes smoother, creating a more natural and relaxed appearance. Results from BOTOX typically last up to three to four months and continuous treatments are necessary in order to maintain the effects over time.
Does BOTOX hurt?
A BOTOX treatment is done in the office and requires no downtime. There is no significant pain, only the small prick of the tiny needle, which has been reported to feel like a bee sting or a bug bite. The approximate number of injections needed will vary based on each patient’s individual wants or needs. The effects of BOTOX start to show in about three days, with the full effects of treatment seen in about ten days.
What else can BOTOX treat?
BOTOX has also been shown to treat more medical conditions other than cosmetic applications. These include:
- A safe and effective treatment option to help people manage chronic migraines, prevent headaches, and improve their quality of life.
- Treatment option for excessive sweating. BOTOX injections are given in affected areas, such as the armpits, hands, feet, or face.
- An effective way of treating the debilitating condition in which people have a sudden urge to pass urine, urinary incontinence.
- May help stop muscles contracting or twitching when the person doesn't want them to.
